You won’t get lost with this valuable tool

Writers, find your way with Google maps.

Write a richer story when you step onto the streets of your tale.

One day, I wrote a character stopped at Starbucks but turns out there are no Starbucks on that street. Duh! I assumed by now, a Starbucks existed on every street in America. I was wrong. Thank you, Google Maps.

If you have an Iphone you might enjoy the Apple Maps app. The 3D effect on a handheld device, although small, is fun to play with. Made me feel as if I was the character walking down my street.

With the maps tool, you can visit any town, drive down any street, and walk up to the door of any gin joint you choose. Will help you avoid my mistake and know for sure if there is a gin joint or Starbucks there. LOL

Thanks to Sheila Good over at Cow Pasture Chronicles for a great post on using Google Maps. Pop over and check it out.

  1. The wonders of the internet–specifically Google Maps and similar programs, enable writers to include settings in their work without ever having visited the locale. I have a WIP with a guy walking the streets of Paris. To add color and potentially a plot point, he must get from near the Eiffel Tower (coincidental with your image!) to another location. Without a map app I couldn’t knowledgeably add streets, etc. Maybe most readers wouldn’t know the difference, but why short shrift a story for those who do?

    1. Most readers might not know the difference but you can bet your last dollar someone would. A lot of people wouldn’t know that the Champ de Mars park almost surrounds the Eiffel Tower, but your character does. 🙂

  2. In our city we have two star bucks one in the mall, and the other one near the supermarket. We have a whole bunch of Tim Hortons where we can get coffee and also two Second Cup Coffee Shops. For a small size city, we have quite a few shops where we can get coffee. Oh we have a third Star Bucks Coffee Shop, inside Chapters Book Store. 🙂
