Yes you can complete a children’s book

My fourth children’s picture book to the editor so thought I’d share with you a bit about my process.  kid reading a picture book

Writing a children’s picture book isn’t easy, but it doesn’t need to be daunting.

As with all stories, it begins with an idea.

Here is how my new idea began. A friend’s grandson gave me the spark of an idea when she shared his reaction to A Reluctant Little Prince. Apparently, he was fascinated with the firefighter page.

Eventually, the story came together.

Now I must decide whether to attempt the illustrations myself or find an affordable illustrator.

Hope to have the new book released in the fall. Wish me luck.

If you have an idea swirling around in your mind, go for it. Here are some tips that might help.

  1. I just found your site and read your article with great interest. I have written and illustrated three animal stories for small children in the last years. Actually I am more of an illustrator than an author. But in the end I had a lot of fun inventing and writing the stories myself. However, I could also imagine working with a children’s book author.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
And I wish you much success with your new book.

  2. I’m on my third book and counting. Picture book writing is hard work. Seriously the revising process drives me crazy. Somehow it all comes together.

      1. I’m going to say it’s harder to write for kids than a novel. With a novel it’s got to be relatable and with kids every element is critical. The writing part is easy for me but it’s the revision with layout to font to language and sentence structure….I could go on.

  3. Thanks for this. I have been thinking about a children’s book with my dog as the star. Right now bogged down with new blog and memoir I’m writing.
I’d like to ask a favor. Can you go to my blog and tell me if you think it works and what I can do better. I would really appreciate it. Let me know if I can do anything for you.
