Do you know if you are suffering from brain-drain?

But Beware of Summer Brain-drain!braindrain

An affliction that slips up on you along with the rising temperatures, humidity,thermometer-153138_640

and buzzing mosquitoes.

You may not notice it at first. Your brain cells and ideas drain away slowly when you decide to take a few days to welcome the sun and blue skies.sun-151763_640

Next, you’ll decide to skip a day of writing or blogging. I mean one day won’t hurt, or even a couple. Right? But before long a week has passed, you’ve forgotten a much-needed password and discover your muse is missing. You’ve developed foggy brain and reached the summer danger zone.

How do you combat this affliction , and survive until fall?

The cure for brain-drain can be done as you enjoy the summer.

  • Read good books. Notice the plural. One won’t get the job done.
  • Write. Write every day, even if it’s just fifty words. The writing doesn’t have to be prize winning. Once you get started, a sentence or two will become a paragraph and stop the brain-drain.
  • Music. Listen to music. It feeds the soul.
  • Watch old movies. That’s right old movies. Because the writers didn’t rely on “special effects” as much as the newer ones.

  1. All great tips Jean. I think we all get our share of brain drain, especially writers. Nothing better than a good timeout, a nice refreshing drink and a couple of good books to regenerate. 🙂

  2. Exercise helps. A sunny perch to write or read is a must. Baking cookies is a huge help. That’s when I do my best thinking. Maybe it has something to do with the homey aroma of chocolate chip cookies in the oven.

  3. I am watching my two grand daughters for the summer while their parents work. Two beautiful girls ages 9 and 2. They help with brain drain, but add to body drain, especially at the age of 73. They do keep me laughing though. The two year old was being complimented by one of the women at the pool today on how adorable she is, as the woman bent over and said to her, “where did you get that beautiful hair?” she passed gas. My grand daughter crinkled up her nose, smiled and said, “you farted.” out loud. So much for adorable…….Have a great summer :o)…

  4. Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
Last week as I was scheduling posts and writing a chapter for my latest book I was overcome by this malady. It has been a hectic time with country and house move, getting work done, and various other external activities..but funnily enough having my writing to focus on is keeping me sane.. It is the one organised thing in the day… how about you? Head over to Jean’s and let her know.

  5. Amazingly I am so far managing to avoid the summer brain drain. Quite the opposite, I’m more productive than in a loooong while, much thanks to plenty of beer and the wonders of bringing the task of writing out into the garden. 😀
