I’ve read good and bad about both.
But there must be a good way to DIY.
As a writer, unless we’ve hit the NYT Best Seller list on our first time at bat, we need an affordable good book cover.
So how can I do that?
One thing I do know, is the right tools are a must!
Taking a hammer to my computer won’t help, sigh.
This article is packed with tips to help us look at our designs.
Not only will you find great tips to maximize your book cover, there are links, and specific specs to get you started.
So if, or when you’re ready to take the leap, be ready.
This sounds like it’s not for the faint of heart, but doable.

This one is going in my research file.
What about you guys? Have any of you done your own book cover or have you hired a pro?
I’d love to hear your experience.
You’ve made it this far so give me just two more seconds and hit Facebook and Twitter and share.
Thank you!
If you’re not already, I’d be much obliged if you would follow me @jeancogdell on Twitter or jean.cogdell on Facebook!
I just used createspace and kindle’s software, they look good enough to me, I stuck to my own sketches but they provide really good sketches/pix too.

I have been doing a heck of a lot of research on book covers. An article I read recently said NEVER to do one yourself-even if you are a graphic designer. I thought that was harsh. I plan to do my own cover and have been absorbing all sorts of tips and tricks. Some things I have learned: Simple is better and don’ go crazy with your fonts 🙂

I agree. I have hired an illustrator for the art work but will be designing the cover myself. Good luck!

Thank-you for the helpful article!!!!! I don’t have any money so I had to design my own book cover, which I really enjoyed doing. I used one of Createspace templates and used my own photo. It was kind of a time-consuming task, but I really liked the way it turned out – very simple but with meaning. I have had lots of people ask me about the cover for my ghost story novel. I took the photo in a ghost town, Bodie, California and used that as the photo. However, if I had the money, I would definitely have someone help me out with the cover of my next book, because it is a painful process (and fonts drive me crazy!!!!).
